Like I said, Germany/Austria produced some great musicians, and they happen to be my favorite composers too (Mozart and Beethoven). During the Baroque time period, Wien a home to the emperor and developed the atmosphere of artistic creativity, and became the music capital. Most of the composers I've mentioned at one point lived and performed at Wien. The Baroque period preceded before the Classical music era. The Baroque period slightly differs from the Classical music era in that the former is more magnificent and dramatic. Bach and Handel show this well with the former's glorious church sons and latter's dramatic orchestras. The Classical music era was ruled by the musical prodigy Mozart. Man, I love this guy. Since I was a baby to when I played Clarinet,  I always heard or played Mozart. Then the Beethoven is born, and a new era starts: Romanticism. Beethoven is so unique and prestigious that in the textbook, he gets his own chapter. Beethoven's Symphony #5 is so memorable that almost anyone can recognize it.

Kant and his Philosophie

Hallo alle,

So for my AMD2, I thought I would talk about Kant. Kant is important because he is a German philosopher. YAY!!! Ich ihm in meine Philosophie kurse gefunden. He war sehr interessant. He thought, in the sense of good will, that we do not have good will in we expect some in return for a good deed. In short he says that "a good will is unconditionally good if the value of good will does not have the condition of having good effects." Verstehen Sie? It's okay if you don't. :)

Anyways, much like the Germans we have been reading about, Kant was also a skeptic. In fact, skepticism was one of his major philosophical studies during the period of Enlightenment (same time as Isaac Newton and Carl Friedrich Gauss). Based on his theories of Metaphysics and Ethics, I would say that Kant represents the Germans and their skepticism throughout the world. Ich finde seine Erkenntnistheorin toll.

Tschüss,

Jonathon Parker

AMD 2

Ich will Europa gehen, especially after ich lese Rebecca's post on ihre favorite moments in Europa. Deutschland seemed like ein gute Land zu reisen. While ich bin ein Deutsche Student, ich will auch the rest of Europa sehen. Das essen of die Länder of Europa interests mich greatly und Ich habe gern essen! The sunset Rebecca hat gesprochen sounded beautiful und ich would love to experience something like that as well. Europa ist compared to Amerika a lot und while wir share a common "western kultur" ich denke dass die variations amongst die Länder of Europa make it incredible und special. Also the fact dass Rebecca kann travel to various countries in merely elf Uhr ist exciting. Wenn gehe ich to Europa, ich will to travel all across Europa und ich will nicht neglect die Länder dass many people refuse to visit like Turkey, Russia und die Czech Republic. Diese Länder sind as interesting as any western European Länder und ich can't wait zu lernen more about their past und kultur. Rebecca's post didn't teach me too much new about Europa aber it reminded mich of how much ich will to visit someday. Ich am going to work hard to make my dream trip come true just like Rebecca did.

AMD 2

I really liked how she gave an insiders perspective on what she was going through mentally before leaving for the trip. I have never gone abroad for that long of a time and therefore never really thought about how stressful packing and leaving could be. I rarely if ever have been homesick during the traveling I've done, but once again I've only been on a trip for a couple of weeks at most. My favorite part of the blog entries that I read though was how despite some bouts of homesickness in general she seems to do a really good job of enjoying and making the most out of her experience. In closing this AMD definitely increased my desire to study abroad at some point during college.

AMD 2

Although it was a television show for children, I was happy I understood a lot. They did speak quite quickly at moments, though, and then I lost ability to translate. It looked very similar to some children's programs we have here in the US, mostly for older children since it has a lot of real life humor, mixed with explanations of science and other subject. Like during this episode, when the cook got a "Pickel," they explored why - it was because he had eaten chocolate. And they looked at the ingredients and nutrients in chocolate that are both healthy and unhealthy. Which kind of explains the connection between cooking, chocolate fondue, pimples, and the science of chocolate. Still a little odd!

Education in Germany

Germany continues to alienate me. While their weird culture and rules are messed up (jk. I think they're just a bit different from us), their education system also brings madness.

Egh Hello? What the heck is going on? Oh well, wikipedia is here for the rescue (thanks god wikipedia is not blacked out). States (Länder) are primarily responsible for education, meaning that depending on a region the education system will be different.

There are five types of secondary education. Gymnasium, as we learned in the chapter vocab list, is a college preparatory high school. In order to graduate from Gymnasium  and also be admitted to a German Hochschule, one must take and pass the graduation exam, Abitur. There are also other types of complicated schools that I still have a hard time comprehending, such as Hauptschule, a technical-vocational secondary school.

I think I've written enough for a post. I have gotten a glimps of Deutsch Buildungssystem, but I still have confusions. Perhaps in my next post, I can try to clear this confusion up.

AMD 2 - Freiburg Blog

I thought the blog was really interesting. It was cool getting to read about her crazy Oktoberfest partying and how much fun she had. It sounds like quite an experience. I thought it was funny how she described it as "a vortex." I can only imagine how intense, exciting, and overwhelming it must've been to be an exchange student at one of the craziest parties in the world. I liked reading her blog because it was easy and fun to read, and sounds like something that I would write about/do if I were abroad in Germany. I was impressed with how much she wrote - hopefully I'll have a chance to get to read more of it later in the semester!

AMD 2 Cole Grisham

The language is slow and simple enough to where even a 102-level German-speaker can keep up, so that added an extra dimension worth mentioning. In all, the movie was great, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys darker independent films. I plan to look up more of Michael Haneke’s work simply due to this film. Also, the trailer is below for anyone interested.

AMD 2

My German does not do justice to this blog so I will continue this entry in English. The blog was interesting because it gave me a different kind of look on Germany. Instead of just reading from the textbook it was a personal account and it was obviously more pesonal. This, to me, is a much better way to learn about the country because it seems much more real.

Willkommen!!

Welcome to our class blog!

We will be using this blog throughout the semester for two kinds of assignments:

1. Once per chapter, the homework plan will direct you to post a response to the culture readings for the chapter on the blog.

2. Roughly every other week, the homework plan will direct you to post here for your Abenteuer mit Deutsch (AMD) assignment. First you do
a fun activity that involves German, then you post about it. You should spend an hour total on this (maybe 45-55 minutes doing something, 5-15 minutes posting about it). See Was ist ein AMD, AMD Ideen
and Beispiele for ideas. This should get you excited about the kinds of things you can do!

Whenever you post something, please include your name and the name of the assignment (e.g. AMD2, Kultur5) as labels. See "Blog: How To" for more details!
