Kultur 8
I swear that these articles are written just to get a reaction from American readers. This week's seemed simple enough, but these articles treat Germans like aliens! The sauna thing was interesting, but not really that strange. I've never been in a sauna, but I guess there's a first time for everything. The 'draftphobia" was VERY odd though. Have their doctors not pointed out that this phenomena doesn't exist, or have their cultural ideals affected their science as well? Interestingly enough, both of these articles were about Germans and their bodies. I seem to be seeing two patterns about Germans from both of these articles. They are very aware yet comfortable with their bodies, and they really like rules and regulations. Americans for one hate rules, and are aware of their bodies but in a negative, "I'm not good enough," sort of way. I don't know if I could live in Germany, but I do respect them for their commitment to rules and their openness about their bodies. On a different note, the older student thing was just weird. Get off your butt, and do something with your life! I love college, but I could never live my life with no purpose until I was 30! Economical times can be hard, but that's not an excuse for being lazy. Overall these articles pointed out small quirks about Germans, but nothing anyone should fear or fret over. While we may be cultural odd to each other, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot separating the two of us.
