Weirdest German Blog Post Contestant #1

For my AMD, I decided to tell an medieval German story called Schwanklied. Personally, I find it kind of hilarious. Some might find it weird. I learned about it in my Later Middle Ages class and it got me thinking. Germans really love to talk about poo. So much of their humor and everything has to do with it! Plus the invention of the greatest word ever: "Sheisse" Unfortunately, I could not find this story online in English or German, even after a long while of awkward searching. But here is the story retold (probably rather inaccurately) It takes place in Germany:

Schwanklied--Neidhart von Reuenthal (d 1250)

There once was a prince who wanted desperately to have a certain princess as his wife. She was fair and highly prized, and so it was that only the best could impress her. The prince searched the countryside for a rare flower and when he found it, he wanted to keep it for her. So he covered the flower with his hat and planned to bring her and her parade to the rare flower and ask for her hand in marriage. But, while he was gone, disaster struck. A lowly peasant came to the place and lifted the hat. Upon finding the flower he stomped on it and then took a shit where it once was, afterwords covering his business up with the hat. Later, the prince returned eagerly with his soon to be bride to show her his gift. But when he lifted the hat, it was not what he was expecting. Sheisse! It was sheisse, rather than the flower. The princess' court was offended and his marriage and life fell apart. He was in such a fit of rage at the peasants that he went to the village and hacked of one arm of each of them.

The End

Here is the picture depicting the story. Note especially the top panel.
