AMD 5

This is a picture of Currywurst which is pork sausage with curry ketchup it is most popular around Berlin

This is called Hendl which is basically just fried chicken and is popular throughout Germany

This is Kartoffelsalat which is German potato salad

This is Kohlroulade which is German cabbage roll .

A true German meal might consist of some of the prior listed foods and then be finished off with a cake or tart. Cheesecake is popular as well.

My heritage is German on both sides and my Grandma used to make some of the traditional wursts and German desserts. I've always really like German cuisine when I want an extremely hearty and sustaining meal. If you haven't ever experienced German food I would suggest a trip to Metzger's. I usually get the Wurst Platter which has three different types of Wurst and spatzle (German noodles) on the side. Well I'm hungry now.

I always had fun with the "hunt-master." Through Jägerbombs, I've puked, cried, and passed out. I saw the black hole of my life, and at the same time I've seen the unicorns gliding through the Big House. I've had so much fun with Jägermeister that I'm gonna write my AMD about it.

German 70-proof digestif, an alcoholic beverage served after a meal, is made with 56 different herbs and spices. Yummmmm. The original distiller was an enthusiastic hunter, which is how the drink got its name from. How cool is that name though? Jägermeister.  Jäger-meister. Such a cool name. The drink was actually originally developed as a cough syrup and you can definitely taste it. When I first drank it, it really tasted like a cough syrup, and maybe that's why I like the drink. It goes down better and less bitter, but rather sweet.
The Cross on top of the stag refers to the stories of  St.Hubertus and St.Eustace, patron saints of hunters whom I never of. But the process of distillation is pretty cool. The ingredients are 56 herbs, fruits, roots, and spices including citrus peel, licorice, anise, poppy seeds, saffron, ginger, juniper berries and ginseng. Damn. Then these are ground then steep in water and alcohol for 2-3 days. Then the mixture is filtered and stored in oak barrels for about a year. A year! Afterwards the liqueur is filtered again and mixed with sugar, caramel, alcohol, and water. Then for the last time it is filtered and bottled. Considering that it takes at least a year to produce it, my $30 for each fifth is totally worth it.

AMD 5

For my AMD 5, I went to the "Step Into German" website. The first thing that caught my eye was the Soccer tab. My biggest hobby is playing and following sports. I already knew that soccer is by far the most popular sport in Germany but they confirmed it with, "Let us take you on a tour through a country where soccer is truly king" so I was really interested on reading up on it. I went to the "Soccer Cities" tab and went to a few of the cities that I have heard of before. I checked out some really cool pictures of Soccer stadiums they have and other famous/main attractions each city might have to offer. I think if I had to pick a place to visit, it would either be Berlin or München. Berlin has so much history behind it and I am really interested in that, also the pictures from there look really cool with lots going on in a big city like that. Then, München also looks really nice with the scenery. Both cities would have good soccer teams to watch and I'm sure with cities like that they are really into their teams. Then after that I listened to a soccer podcast that talked about the different teams and soccer info which I somewhat understood. Lastly, I went to the "Soccer in the Movies" tab. This was by far my favorite thing I found on the website because it had video trailers for movies dealing with German soccer. I watched all of the trailers they had and I had 2 clear favorites. First off, "Deutschland. Ein Sommermärchen" looked really good. It showed the significance of German soccer, and all of the hype behind the sport. The soccer players are treated like the top celebrities in the country and obviously in the specific city they play in. The shots they got inside the stadium during games looked so awesome with the crowd so into it. I never have been to any pro or meaningful soccer game of any sort because it is not as big in the US. It is something I would really like to do someday. I think I understood most of the trailer and from the title, I think it's about an underdog team who wins the championship of some sort because märchen means "fairy tale." I might even decide to watch this one. Then my other favorite was "Das Wunder von Bern" and I actually totally forgot about this movie until I started watching the trailer for it because we watched it in my high school German class! I really enjoyed the movie, and I thought it had a good story behind it dealing with soccer. I really enjoyed doing this AMD because the website was very good and had a topic that I am interested in.

AMD 5 - Tim und Struppi

For this AMD, I decided to read more Tim und Struppi. At the end of last semester, I also read some of these comics - but I figured there would be a lot more vocabulary/grammar I would recognize after these last few months. It was a lot more fun reading the story this time, because I understood a lot more. Last time I was surprised by how much I understood, and this time was even more surprising. It was great! Here are a few examples of pages that feature things we learned this semester:

am nächsten morgen - adjective ending! time expression!
Recht haben
ob

Show me how you dance
And I’ll tell you who you are.
I can tell by how you look
What you’re in the mood for.

Sunglasses on and to the bar;
That’s where all the pretty women are.
Take a dive right into the leisure pool
And a Caipirinha — pretty cool.

AMD 5

I followed the "Germans and Americans talk" link on the suggested AMD ideas page but I couldn't find what was described. Instead I found a "German Pictorial Lexicon" that uses pictures to describe exactly what a German speaker means to say when they say a word. For example Americans might think of Wonderbread but Germans might have a totally different picture in their minds of the prototypical "bread." I'm currently taking a CompLit class and so this is relevant to what I learn in that class.
First I looked at the University-related words and saw a picture of the complicated recycling bin system. It was a good idea, but the site really isn't that good at all. It is woefully incomplete and there are double entries. Some of the pictures are blurry, vague, or pretty universal. I wouldn't recommend checking it out.
Next I followed a link: http://www.fln.vcu.edu//menu.html to a bunch of German stories. I tried to read "The Frog King" in German but I switched to English. I recognize a couple of details from this Grimm version that I think I read in the edited version I read as a kid. It's interesting that we call it "The Princess and the Frog" instead of "The Frog King." I read all of the stories that I didn't recognize. My favorite was "'The Turnip" because it didn't really make that much sense and ended abruptly. In "The Brave Little Tailor" there is a funny little moment when the tailor tells the flies to stop eating his jam but they "understood no German." I recognize a lot of these stories as ones I've read by Hans Christian Anderson, so I wonder where they first originated.

Ich mag A Cappella, also habe ich mich sehr aufgeregt.

Very difficult to translate, believe it or not.).

As the pictures I posted hopefully show, there are some pretty random things you can learn about. I’m not sure what a cooper is in English (bucket maker, it appears?), but now I know auf deutsch they are called Büttneren. Good to know. Moving on. More interesting to me were the pictorial depictions of city life and details, like the picture of a city map.

In all, these were fun, albeit strange in some categories to explore. I have included the link below for anyone who wants to play around on this web site. It’s good stuff.

AMD 5

It was a very fantastical film, and was very interesting to see. From what I know, this was a very good example of what the Nazi’s considered to be good German film. I did watch it with subtitles, but tried for the most part to go without, and it wasn’t too bad!
They used very simple language and spoke pretty clearly through most of it. My favorite scene may have been when they were on the moon, where “Ein tag auf dem Mond ist ein Jahre auf der Erde”… or something like that!
