Last year when I was in Germany, I had the chance to go to Köln for a weekend. I knew nothing of the city, but I had made a couple of friends from there and they wanted me to visit. Therefore, I decided to go for a weekend. As it turns out, they had a festival that weekend known as the Kölner Lichter, or the Lights of Cologne. I never had the opportunity to know what it truly was about so I decided to look up some information about it.
It is very interesting when we compare the festival to the articles we read regarding patriotism. This festival is a celebration of Köln and it appeals to people's feelings of the city. It brings me to think that perhaps people aren't patriotic for the country, but that they are very loyal to their city. There have been songs written about the city, and everyone knows them and sings along while we all sat next to the river watching one of the most spectacular firework shows I have seen.
It was truly a wonderful night, and it was a side of German culture I had no expected to exist, much less experience. There are many things like this that I wish I could experience and get to know about German culture. Perhaps another trip is in order?
This video was not taken by me, unfortunately...
